The RiverBend Growth Association (RBGA) young adults committee members recently dedicated their time to making a difference in the local community. Led by Roxana High School, students from five area high schools—Roxana, Alton, Marquette Catholic, East Alton-Wood River, and Civic Memorial—volunteered two hours at Refuge, a non-profit organization based in Madison County, Illinois. Refuge serves children and caregivers who have experienced trauma due to abuse, neglect, and violence, offering counseling, caregiver support, and education.

During the volunteer session, the students engaged in various tasks to support Refuge’s mission. They cleaned and organized toys, labeled envelopes, cleaned the facility, and created over 100 affirmation cards to provide encouragement to the youth who benefit from Refuge’s services.

Boston Talley of Refuge expressed gratitude for the students’ efforts, stating, “We couldn’t do things for people in need without groups like the RiverBend Growth Association.” Erin Bickle, also from Refuge, highlighted the organization’s impact: “We have been here in our community serving for ten years! This last year alone, we served over 500 individuals!”

The RBGA student members from Roxana High School who participated included Wyatt Doyle, a senior representative; Macy Hart, a senior representative; Noah Smith, a junior representative; and Anthony Hardin, a junior representative. Wyatt is a varsity track and cross-country runner and plans to study Civil Engineering while competing in athletics at the collegiate level. Macy is a Varsity Cheerleader and Softball player. She plans to attend SIUE in the fall for business. Noah participates in Marching and Concert Band, Choir, and Theatre. After high school, Noah plans to attend an undecided University to study Veterinarian Science. Anthony is a varsity track and cross-country runner as well as a proud member of the marching and concert band at RHS. His post-high school plans are still undecided.

These students and their peers from other local schools exemplified leadership and community spirit through their work with Refuge. Refuge representatives also spoke at the RBGA meeting, sharing insights into the organization’s mission and the critical services provided to the community. Their presentation reinforced the importance of community involvement and how local support helps sustain Refuge’s impactful work. The RiverBend Growth Association youth members’ volunteer efforts demonstrate the power of service and the positive impact young leaders can have on their community. Their dedication to helping organizations like Refuge ensures that vital support continues to reach those in need.
