A Safe Voice for Every Child: Inside the Madison County Child Advocacy Center

Written By: Mia Buchanan

Madison County Child Advocacy Center, located in Wood River, Illinois, provides a haven for abused children and strives to limit the number of times a child is interviewed to reduce the adverse effects that numerous interviews may inflict on a child. The center works with professionals like police, social workers, and counselors to investigate cases, conduct interviews, and connect families to treatment and resources. This happens all in one place to reduce stress on the child. The center’s top priority is to protect children, support healing, and make the process of reporting and responding to abuse less traumatic.

The RiverBend Growth Association Young Adults Committee, comprising five high schools, partnered with the Madison County Child Advocacy Center to lend a helping hand and make a contribution to the community. Marquette Catholic High School is one of these high schools and led the non-profit experience for this organization. Four Marquette students sit on the committee who are Mia Buchanan, Joseph Ewers Jr., Brianne Bagwill, and Amani McClendon. All students found this opportunity informative and the volunteers’ contributions heart-warming.

The students did not have direct interactions with the children, but they still found a way to contribute by organizing snacks and clothing for the children and writing uplifting messages in chalk with fun colors.

One of the Marquette students said, “Being here encourages me to do good and make a difference in my community to help strengthen the voices of those who may have been belittled” (Brianne Bagwill). We encourage all communities to come and support the Madison County Child Advocacy Center in any way they can. Your voice is strong and makes a difference in the lives of those who need it.

Another student said, “I’m so grateful for this opportunity to help those who truly need it” (Amani McClendon). All students were grateful and happy to help the Center, knowing that their work would help lead to the happiness and comfort of children. The Madison County Child Advocacy Center plays an important role in supporting and protecting children in need. The students who volunteered with the organization are truly grateful for the opportunity to contribute to such meaningful work. Through this experience, they gained a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by vulnerable children, the importance of compassion, and the impact of community support. They leave the experience feeling thankful, inspired, and proud to have been part of something that makes a difference. They are grateful to be part of such a generous and loving community!
