GODFREY, IL – As its October 2025 Small Business of the Month, the RiverBend Growth Association has chosen Abs Workout Plans. And with this month’s calendar being full of fun Fall festivities and Halloween sweets, the timing perhaps couldn’t be better.

Abby Thurman is the owner of Godfrey-based Abs Workout Plans. Thurman launched the business nearly four years ago, and the business has three additional personal trainers on staff who take part in continued training that includes learning about ACSM/idea education and maintaining annual credit hours toward certifications.

“I started this business out of a deep passion for fitness and a desire to help others unlock their full potential. After going through my own journey of health and fitness, I realized there was a real need for guidance, support, and genuine connection in this space,” Thurman shares. “This isn’t just a business for me; it’s a calling.”

Located at 620 Armsway, Unit C, in Godfrey, Thurman further shares that the business has been in its new building now for a year and a half. “It’s hard to believe we’ve already been here that long,” she notes. “What started as a small space with a big vision has grown into something so much greater.”

She credits the welcomed, but unexpected, growth to the support the business has received from the community and to the “passion behind its purpose.” Thurman says Abs Workout Plans isn’t just about helping people to look their best, but also to help them feel confident, empowered and in control of their own life journey.

“Everything I offer comes from experience, education, and a real commitment to making a difference,” she says. “I do this because I believe in building strong foundations, breaking limiting beliefs, and celebrating progress in every form — physically, mentally, and emotionally. Whether it’s through training programs, mindset, nutrition, my goal is to help people step into their power — in life.”

Thurman further says that moving into its much bigger location “was a leap of faith,” but that she knew it was what was needed to continue growing and serving clients at a higher level. The new space, she says, has allowed Abs Workout Plans to create an environment conducive to both an individual’s physical transformation as well as to one’s growth inside and out. Clients can experience growth in both confidence and connection while becoming physically healthy.

“We’ve come a long way from where we started, and every step has been driven by our commitment to empowering others. Whether you’ve been with us since the beginning or just walked through our doors, we’re so grateful to be on this journey with you,” says Thurman.

“What sets me apart isn’t just what I do, it’s how I do it and why I do it,” she adds. “I lead with purpose, integrity, and heart, creating a space where people don’t just chase results: They experience real, lasting transformation. I’m not here to offer a one-size-fits-all approach or just check boxes. I meet people where they are, help them see what’s possible, and walk with them through the hard parts, not just the highlight reel.”

Thurman notes that she has intentionally built the business with a strong foundation of faith, family values, and community, and she pours that foundation into every client relationship.

“From the attention to detail in posing sessions to the emotional and mental support behind the scenes — I’m committed to the full picture, not just the physical outcome,” Thurman says. “I’ve also lived this lifestyle. I know the pressure, the discipline, the sacrifice, and the reward. That real-world experience, combined with my passion for helping others grow in confidence and strength, is what makes this more than a business. It’s a mission.”

The past three-and-a-half years haven’t been all sunshine and roses, though. Thurman says, “Like many entrepreneurs and women in the fitness/wellness space, I’ve faced my share of challenges, and every one of them has shaped the way I lead today. Building a business from the ground up, going from a small space to a much bigger one, has come with plenty of financial risks, growing pains, and leadership lessons. But every challenge has fueled my growth.”

Thurman says that some of the challenges along the way included navigating the pressure of trying to balance family, business, and personal goals. She also says she has had to personally work through self-doubt, burnout, and the constant comparison that can come with working in a highly visible, competitive industry.

“There were times when I questioned if I was doing enough, being enough, or if I was on the right path. I’ve also faced health challenges, which reminded me how important it is to slow down and take care of the body that carries you: Not just for the stage, but for life. The challenges have deepened my purpose, sharpened my mindset, and made me more passionate about helping others push through their own struggles without losing themselves along the way,” Thurman candidly shares.

One of the greatest opportunities that Thurman says has come from launching and growing her business has been the ability to impact others’ lives, not just physically but emotionally, mentally and even spiritually.

“Helping someone feel stronger, more confident, and more in control of their journey is something that never gets old,” she shares. “It’s about more than just physical progress; it’s about witnessing someone realize their worth, break through personal limits, and start showing up for themselves in a whole new way. That transformation — from the inside out — is the most powerful part of what I do. And I get to create a space where people feel seen, supported, and capable. That’s the real opportunity — and it’s why I show up every day with passion and purpose.”

Giving back to the community that has given its generous support of Abs Workout Plans is also an important part of why the business keeps going and growing. “Giving back is a core part of my mission, because success means nothing if I’m not lifting up others along the way. I’m committed to serving my community through creating opportunities for growth, confidence, and connection,” Thurman points out.

Community service through Abs Workout Plans involves mentoring and aspiring athletes and competitors, offering free workshops and tips for beginners, supporting women who are rebuilding their self-confidence through fitness, sharing real and honest insight on health, mindset and balance as well as volunteering time for local events or causes.

“Whether it’s through sponsorship, showing up to support others, or using my platform to shine a light on important causes, I’m here to give back however I can. I’ve proudly sponsored Eagle Fest and the Marquette fundraiser: Two incredible events that bring people together and support local growth and connection.

“I regularly volunteer at my daughters’ school, because I believe it’s important to be present, involved, and supportive in the environments that shape the next generation. I’ve also had the opportunity to contribute to The Women’s Thrive: An incredible initiative that empowers women to grow in confidence, purpose, and faith,” she further notes.

“I believe in meeting people where they are and reminding them, they’re not alone,” Thurman adds. “My goal is to create a ripple effect where everyone I help feels empowered to turn around and help someone else. That’s how communities grow stronger: Not just physically, but mentally and emotionally too.”
