GODFREY, IL – The RiverBend Growth Association has chosen 5 Diamond Campgrounds as its April 2024 Small Business of the Month award recipient.

Owned by Brian Campbell and Matt Diamond, 5 Diamond Campgrounds opened in October 2020 next to the Lewis and Clark Confluence Tower, just off Illinois Route 3 at Hartford. The campground offers 49 spaces for campers and RVs, along with water, sewer and electric hookups, and a small convenience store located at the nearby Colman’s Country Campers, also owned by Campbell and Diamond.

5 Diamond Campgrounds is open year-round, offering spaces on a daily, weekly or monthly basis for travelers and their campers or RVs. It further offers an easy commute to nearby attractions and communities throughout the St. Louis and Metro East region.

The campground was established to address the needs of two types of regional visitors: Tourists, and transient workers.

5 Diamond Campgrounds fulfills a need for those who are temporarily assigned to work in the area, such as those coming to work on short- and long-term projects with the Wood River Refinery. “For those workers, a camper is a good way to go from job to job,” Campbell shared in a previous news report. “They don’t have to worry about unloading and loading into a rental house or apartment.”

“There was such a need for a campground to house transient workers,” Manager Susie Sweetman further noted. “Providing a safe space for families coming to our area, for work or pleasure, has been one of the greatest opportunities in running this business.”

Some of the tourists accommodated on-site travel to the area to select from all the recreational housing options available through Colman’s Country Campers. The availability of the campgrounds right there is a definite perk; it allows buyers to have a place to park their new “vacation spot” until they are ready to take it back home with them.

And for co-owner Matt Diamond, the concept of owning the campgrounds and the retail store just seems natural. His family already owned Diamond Trailer Sales in Litchfield, as well as Litchfield’s Lazy Acres Campground and Rustic Acres Campground in New Douglas.

5 Diamond Campgrounds is physically located at 429 Confluence Tower Dr., Hartford, IL 62048. Its business address, or “headquarters,” is #2 Fun Ln., also in Hartford.

Over the past three-and-a-half years of operations, Sweetman said that there have been a few challenges. “Every business has challenges,” she shared, “but ours have been none we couldn’t handle.”

The business has also expanded its team since its Fall 2020 beginnings. “We started with one employee, and now we employ three people,” Sweetman noted. “We also extended our hours.”

The Campgrounds and its crew stay involved in the local communities in several different ways. Sweetman said one way they do this is through ongoing donations to area schools throughout each academic year.

They also participate in bookbag and supply drives and help provide support to families during the Christmas holiday season. The leadership at 5 Diamond Campgrounds actively volunteers with the RBGA Young Adults Committee and you’ll also see the company take part in the annual Hartford Oktoberfest.

“We offer great customer service and a clean campground,” Sweetman added. “And we always work with our campers to accommodate their needs while they’re staying with us.”
