In early January, the RiverBend Growth Association collaborated with the Wood River Business Alliance to explore the organization’s mission, learn about upcoming projects, and share suggestions for improving the local community. This partnership allowed the Young Adults student representatives to gain valuable insight into how local businesses and residents work together to make Wood River a thriving, welcoming place for both current and future generations.
The Wood River Business Alliance, led by Executive Director Kristen Burns, serves as a “One Stop Shop” for business development in the region. It offers resources, educational opportunities, and marketing support to both aspiring entrepreneurs and established business owners. Kristen Burns, the heart of the organization, plays a pivotal role in organizing events and projects, managing outreach and logistics, and analyzing economic data. Her deep-rooted passion for the community fuels her efforts to ensure that Wood River is a place people are proud to call home, with a focus on making the area even better for the next generation.
“I do it for my kids,” Kristen asserted when asked about her inspiration, “I want them to have a hometown that they are proud of and are excited to come back to.”
The student representatives from Marquette Catholic High School had the unique opportunity to interview Kristen and put forward their own ideas for initiatives and improvements. Seniors Rodger Zawodniak and Tyra Wells, along with Juniors Brianne Bagwill and Jami Jones were inspired by the work being done in their own community. “I never realized how many opportunities there are to get involved and volunteer. It’s so important to give back and help shape our hometown for the next generation,” said Rodger Zawodniak.
The upcoming projects spearheaded by the Alliance include initiatives such as new signage, streetscape improvements, and a dog park. These projects, along with the Alliance’s volunteer-driven operations, aim to create a stronger, more unified community. As the Wood River Business Alliance continues to grow and its vision for the future takes shape, more students and community members are encouraged to get involved and help build a brighter tomorrow for Wood River.
